Zoom Effects Online

Zoom Q3HD video recorderZOOM is a music industry favourite with musicians and engineers for its large range of advanced, high  performance yet inexpensive effects processors. Since the debut of the stunningly compact 9002 multi effects unit in 1990, ZOOM has produced a constantly expanding range of highly original and innovative products including guitar effects, studio effects processors, drum machines, samplers, multitrack recorders and much more. Zoom products are designed to fill spaces and needs that many rival manufacturers ignore. It’s this novel attitude, as well as the excellent quality and performance specifications, that has created a huge fan base for the Zoom brand of effects pedals, guitar effects, studio equipment and portable recorders worldwide.

 HD Recorders:

One of the most exciting product ranges in the Zoom family is the HD series of audio and video handheld recorders. The audio units, H1, H2, and H4 all feature built in stereo condenser microphones (and 4 channel setups) and record to SD memory cards, which are now cheaper than ever and provide heaps of storage. The audio quality of these units is stunning, with some being used on professional releases on drum overheads and room / ambience duties and more.

The various models sport useful features such as compression, modelling and effects and can be used as a computer audio interface. I personally have used the H2 to capture vocal introductions to backing tracks on instructional cd’s. It was much easier and cheaper (free!) to record the voice over in a quiet office rather than book a studio and the results were totally professional.

There now is also a range of excellent video recorders, also boasting pro sound quality and the way Zoom keep coming out with fabulous new products, there are bound to be more models released as I write these very words!  Zoom are definitely on the leading edge of modern audio and video technology and continue to amaze us all with their innovation and quality.

The Music Spot stocks a great range of Zoom products, from guitar pedals to multitrack and video recorders.

New H2n released! The best just got better! Great new features and unbeatable quality!

The new Zoom H2n now features the ability to record in XY stereo or MS stereo formats.

XY stereo recording uses two cardiod microphones placed together in what is called “XY” format, with the mics facing in opposite directions and the diaphragms almost touching. This is the standatrd setup for drum overheads etc and is probably the most used stereo recording technique in professional and home studios, as well as live production.

MS recording, on the other hand, uses a directional mic and a figure 8 (bi-directional) mic to capture a stereo image that can be adjusted for width of the stereo field after recording and is mono compatible. This technique is very popular with live recordings and capturing the sound of a large combo, orchestra etc as well as the acoustics of a good sounding room.

Either way, it’s great to now have the choice, as well as the ability to record true 2 0r 4 channel surround sound. An amazingly flexible recording tool.
